  • Comments: This Boeing 747-212B is preserved since 15 January 2009 and known as ‘Jumbo Stay’, a hotel at Stockholm Arlanda Airport. It was delivered factory fresh to Singapore Airlines on 30/03/1976 as 9V-SQE. After serving the airline for more than six years it went on to Pan Am in June 1984 as N727PA where it operated for 8 years. After that, it operated for other airlines including Nationair, Garuda, Cathay Pacific and Tower Air. On 17 January 2002 it was delivered to Swedish charter airline Transjet Airways as SE-RBN. In that same year however, Transjet Airways was declared bankrupt and this Boeing 747 was permanently grounded at Stockholm Arlanda Airport. After being parked for a few years at the airport, it seemed that the aircraft would go to North East Airlines of Swaziland as it was registered as 3D-NEE and it went into the airport’s maintenance hangars to get it airworthy again. Eventually this plan did not materialise and so the aircraft remained grounded at Stockholm Arlanda Airport. In 2006 the airframe was bought by Oscar Diös who was developing a concept of running hostels in boats, trains and lighthouses. Diös’ plan was to turn this Boeing 747 into an airport hostel. After he got the necessary building permit in December 2007, a 3 million dollar restoration program began in 2008 and the aircraft was towed to its current location just near the perimeter of the airport, near the airport’s car rental facilities. The aircraft was renamed ‘Liv’, after the owner’s daughter. The hotel opened its doors in January 2009. It has 33 rooms, each offering between 1-4 beds. There are 76 beds in total. The master suite is located in the cockpit of the aircraft.

That concludes this episode. I hope you enjoyed reading.
